Celtics Unveil Floor Design Featuring Legendary Center's Iconic Number 6
Legacy to Live on in Historic Parquet
BOSTON -- The Boston Celtics will honor the legendary Bill Russell during the upcoming 2022-23 NBA season by painting his iconic jersey number, 6, in the free throw lanes of their parquet floor. The new floor design will debut on November 10 when the Celtics host the Brooklyn Nets for their season home opener. "Bill Russell's legacy is synonymous with the Boston Celtics and the NBA," said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens. "We are thrilled to unveil this new floor design as a permanent tribute to one of the most impactful players and leaders in basketball history." The No. 6 has been retired by the Celtics since Russell's final season in 1969 and is one of only three numbers that are not officially retired by the NBA, along with Michael Jordan's 23 and Wilt Chamberlain's 13. Russell wore the number throughout his entire 13-year career with the Celtics, leading the team to a record 11 NBA championships.
